Norton Simon

European painting and Asian art meet in the public life of a private collection.

An eye across centuries

Chapter 01

Three decades of collecting

Norton Simon assembled European works from the Renaissance to the twentieth century and a collection of South and Southeast Asian art. The museum describes this activity as extending over thirty years.

Chapter 02

Looking in depth

Some artists were collected in substantial groups, including Degas, Goya and Picasso. Repeated attention to an artist offers a different encounter from a collection built around isolated examples.

Chapter 03

The museum record

Today the collection can be explored through museum records and provenance information. Its public presentation also includes modern works acquired by the former Pasadena Art Museum, so the institution’s holdings should not all be attributed to Simon’s personal acquisitions.
