Peggy Guggenheim

From a Manhattan gallery to a Venetian home: collecting as a way of living with artists.

A collection with the door open

Chapter 01

A room for the new

In 1942, Peggy Guggenheim opened Art of This Century in New York. The gallery brought European modernism into conversation with younger American artists. Her support of Jackson Pollock included exhibitions, a stipend and the commission for Mural.

Chapter 02

A change of address

Her collection appeared at the Venice Biennale in 1948. From 1951, visitors could enter her Venetian home to see it. A private interior became a recurring public encounter with modern art.

Chapter 03

The story to follow

Guggenheim’s biography joins friendship, patronage and exhibition-making. Read it through the places she created for art as well as the objects she acquired. The museum’s account supplies the chronology; the interpretation here concerns how a collection meets its audience.
