A private eye, a public reunion
Chapter 01
The collector in the exhibition
Sergei Shchukin’s collection of French modern art became the subject of a major Fondation Louis Vuitton exhibition in 2016–2017. The presentation made a collector’s choices into the organising subject of a museum visit.
Chapter 02
Seeing relationships
Works by artists including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso allow a collection to be read as a network of artistic encounters. An exhibition can temporarily restore relationships that are difficult to perceive when works are seen separately.
Chapter 03
A second biography
Collections acquire histories beyond their founders. This story approaches Shchukin through the exhibition record, its selected artists and its catalogue, rather than imagining his thoughts. The Paris project is a starting point for investigating the collection’s later public life.
